Star tree

The front of our apartment faces west, so it gets extremely hot in the afternoon when the sun shines full on it. We've burned ourselves on our metal front door before.

Molly and I were just sobbing about it. We stormed over to the management office and demanded to know why they'd slaughtered it. The person there hemmed and hawed about some dead stuff in it and liability, etc. Just trim the dead stuff out, idiots! Then she said that the seed bobbles (she called them burrs) were the reason -- people twisted their ankles on them or something. NO GOOD REASON!!!!!

And now the poor tree is dead. It was a beautiful sweetgum tree with star shaped leaves and spikey seed bobbles. When they cut it down, you could see that there was even a star in the center of the trunk. Moronic losers, not respecting living things. They already took out 47 ash trees in the complex this year. They said that we still have lots of trees. Not by our place. And that is no excuse to lose this one. The olive tree across the road that provided some shade blew down in a storm this summer. I love trees. I hate people who destroy them.

I agree. People cut trees down way to quickly, and for very little reason. They just don't see how beautiful and wonderful trees are.

There are people who get it. I was driving down the road about a week ago when I saw a truck that was clearly used in the landscaping business. It had a bumper sticker that made me want to cheer - it had a picture of one of those poor trees with all the limbs cut off to make it "fuller" with a slash through it, and it said "Tree topping hurts". I was unhappy that there was no business name or phone nnumber on the truck - any business that features that bumper sticker is one I would support!

We have lost too many trees to the saws where I live too, and it makes me want to cry. I don't want grass, I want a beautiful tree! If it's in the way, then go around!

Ash trees are getting infested with bugs and a fungus. We lost our ash in the front yard this year to the fungus--it started dropping entire branches in our yard. When it was cut down we could see the fungus spread all over the rings inside. Yuck. Luckily, Iowa City allows us to plant in the right-of-way (between the sidewalk and the street), which we have to do to replace the tree cause the roots fill the front yard. But we miss our tree. Can you petition them to replace yours? Or just plant your own and see if they notice?

My (parents') whole block was denuded due to emerald ash borer. (My parents live close to Michigan.) Supposedly we're getting replacement maple trees, but who knows. It isn't the same place I grew up anymore. However, they had a reason (there really were bugs in them) . . . your people did not. I'm very sorry. :(
